Our Story

We are a small family business located in Oregon and began making candles as a hobby. We started with beeswax given to us by a friend and enjoyed having a few candles around the house, especially during long winter nights. Eventually we tried soy wax and we were hooked. Soy wax is wonderful for candle making. The wax is natural, sustainable, and burns steady and smooth.

The idea for a candle business revolved around one of our sons. He was an eccentric child and was late in developing language skills. He was very social and eager to engage like other children but while his friends were talking quite well, he did not. As he moved through school, there was a point when he could not keep up with traditional curriculum. Eventually he received an educational diagnosis of high functioning autism spectrum disorder. My son in very intelligent, but his mind moves so fast he is unable to stay focused very long on a single subject. He also has a simple view of life. No drama here, every day is a wonderful day. People absolutely love him and are drawn to him. His compassion, softness, and optimism are magnetic.

My son had a wonderful support program in high school and during those years he expressed interest in working and making money. We wanted him to stay focused to complete his schooling and one day I had an inspiration...let's sell our candles. One of the many wonderful characteristics of my kid is the precision he employs when working on a project. Once he understands a process, he follows the procedures perfectly every time. He is our most valued candle maker.

So began our journey. We spent two years developing the business basics. Anyone that has walked the road of candle making will appreciate the adventure of developing a good soy candle. There are hundreds of containers available in different sizes, shapes, and colors. There are dozens of wick options. There are hundreds of aromas. We selected an aroma line that provides a deep and exquisite experience. Our aromas are also free of any pthalates. Soy wax is probably the most challenging wax to work with...it can be very finicky. We finally developed a proprietary method to make beautiful candles every time we pour.

One of our priorities at the very beginning was to make candles in clear glass. Most soy candles on the market are wrapped in a label. We always loved being able to see the candles burning in our home. The soft flickering flame on a dark night or on a dreary winter day. All three of our glass types...clear, frosted, and prism...allow our candles to light up a room.

Our son was also the inspiration for our name Opal Mountain Candles. Jason was born in October and his birthstone is Opal. The gem typically has colorful inclusions and sparkles just like his personality. My son is now 6 feet, 6 inches tall and is a Mountain of a man. We thought our business name was fitting.

We hope you enjoy our candles. Every candle is carefully crafted by hand. There are no better candles on the market. Our passion we share with you.
